Valmet has secured an order to supply integrated marine automation systems for two LNG-hybrid Green Ship 2.0 ferries being constructed for TT-Line at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard. The agreement extends the companies’ existing partnership and covers onboard control systems and lifecycle support services.

GERMANY; CHINA —Valmet has been selected to supply marine automation systems for two new Green Ship 2.0 ferries commissioned by German ferry operator TT-Line. The vessels are under construction at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in China, with the automation package covering machinery operations, power management, bilge control and cargo handling. The order has been recorded in Valmet’s fourth-quarter 2026 order intake, although its financial value has not been disclosed.

Each ferry will measure approximately 240 metres and is designed to accommodate up to 1,000 people. Their propulsion configuration combines liquefied natural gas (LNG) technology with battery systems and shore-power capabilities. Valmet’s integrated automation platform will provide centralized monitoring and control of essential onboard functions, including machinery performance and energy consumption.

The systems are intended to help TT-Line coordinate vessel operations, improve energy management and reduce operational complexity. The combination of hybrid propulsion, battery storage and shore-power connectivity also provides the vessels with additional flexibility in managing energy requirements during voyages and port operations. These capabilities are relevant to ferry operators facing increasing pressure to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions across regional shipping networks.

The agreement also extends beyond the initial equipment supply. Valmet will provide remote technical assistance, maintenance, software upgrades, crew training and spare parts support throughout the vessels’ operating lives. The inclusion of these services is intended to maintain system availability, cybersecurity and performance while helping TT-Line manage long-term maintenance requirements.

The selection continues an existing relationship between the two companies, with Valmet having previously supplied automation systems for TT-Line’s Nils Holgersson and Peter Pan ferries. Using a common automation platform across additional vessels can simplify maintenance procedures, standardize crew operations and reduce the complexity associated with managing different onboard technology systems.

For Valmet, the order reinforces its participation in the marine automation market, where demand is increasingly linked to vessel electrification, hybrid propulsion and digital control technologies. Its involvement in engineering, installation, commissioning and start-up also provides an opportunity to maintain a longer-term service relationship with the ferry operator.

TT-Line operates passenger and freight ferry services connecting Germany, Sweden, Poland and Lithuania across the Baltic Sea. The new vessels form part of its fleet modernization programme, while the contract creates business for Valmet in marine automation and lifecycle services and involves coordination with the Chinese shipbuilding industry. The project reflects the growing role of integrated automation in supporting the operational requirements of next-generation commercial vessels.
