Volkswagen Group taps T-Systems for private cloud buildout to bolster European data sovereignty

Volkswagen Group has contracted T-Systems to build and operate a new private cloud, the Group Private Cloud 2.0. The initiative aims to centralise application infrastructure, enhance data processing within European legal frameworks, and reduce external dependencies, marking a strategic move toward greater digital resilience and regulatory compliance.

Volkswagen Group has awarded T-Systems, the IT services arm of Deutsche Telekom, a contract to establish and globally operate its new private cloud infrastructure. Designated as the Group Private Cloud 2.0, this platform will serve as the central hosting environment for applications across all of Volkswagen's brands, with a long-term roadmap to migrate the majority of existing IT applications onto the system.

According to official disclosures, the private cloud is intended to complement Volkswagen's existing in-house IT landscape while significantly strengthening its data processing capabilities within the European legal framework. Hauke Stars, Volkswagen Group Board Member for IT, stated that the initiative enhances digital resilience by combining technology partnerships, European projects, and proprietary infrastructure, allowing the group to process more data internally to increase economic independence.

The decision underscores a broader industry shift toward data sovereignty, particularly for European enterprises navigating stringent regulatory environments. T Cloud Private, the underlying solution, provides enhanced security, performance, and full control over data locations, addressing critical concerns around cyberattacks and compliance that public cloud alternatives may not fully mitigate.
