Wärtsilä Gas Solutions has been selected to provide comprehensive cargo handling and fuel gas supply systems for two Very Large Ethane Carriers. The vessels, commissioned by a Malaysian shipowner, will be constructed at the Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard with equipment deliveries scheduled for early 2027.

A prominent South Korean shipbuilder has commissioned Wärtsilä Gas Solutions to provide critical infrastructure for two new Very Large Ethane Carriers (VLEC). Under the terms of the agreement, finalized in the fourth quarter of 2025, the provider will engineer and supply the cargo handling and fuel gas supply systems, including integrated control units and necessary instrumentation.

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), a subsidiary of HD Hyundai, is one of the world’s largest shipbuilding entities and a leader in the construction of specialized gas transport vessels. Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, a division of the Finnish technology group Wärtsilä, specializes in innovative systems for the gas value chain, focusing on processing, marine distribution, and cargo control.

This development underscores the sustained demand for specialized maritime transport capable of handling high-volume ethane exports. By securing this contract, the supplier reinforces its technical standing in the VLEC segment, a niche market that requires high-specification safety and efficiency standards.

The project is particularly significant for the Southeast Asian maritime sector, as the vessels are destined for a Malaysian shipowner, indicating regional investment in liquefied gas logistics. For the broader industry, this partnership highlights a trend toward integrated system solutions in vessel design, which streamline shipyard operations and enhance long-term operational reliability. March 2027 has been set as the delivery window for the technical equipment. Investors and stakeholders in the energy transition space should note the continued reliance on sophisticated midstream assets to facilitate the global trade of petrochemical feedstocks.
