MEXICO —Rising power requirements driven by the rapid growth of data centers and mission-critical power systems are pushing industrial equipment vendors to expand regional manufacturing footprints across North America.
To capture this accelerating demand, Brazilian capital goods manufacturer WEG is executing a comprehensive US$ 165 million expansion strategy aimed at quintupling its worldwide output of power generators over the current decade. The multi-stage project seeks to integrate operations established through its acquisition of Marathon while building out resilient supply chain operations across the continent.
The initial phase involves a US$ 24 million allocation to purchase and refit a facility adjacent to the Quma I Industrial Park in Atotonilco de Tula, Mexico, which will focus on generator assembly starting in mid-2027. A subsequent US$ 141 million investment will construct two new industrial sites at an unannounced North American site, introducing vertically integrated component manufacturing for laminations, low- and medium-voltage windings, shafts, and frames. By 2030, these expansions will boost global generator production to nearly 50 units daily across operations in Mexico, the United States, Brazil, and China, up from ten units today.
This initiative directly addresses supply bottlenecks facing hyper-scale cloud operators, enterprise data center developers, and utility grid operators seeking rapid access to back-up generation equipment. As power generation demands shift toward local production and enhanced component control, vertically integrated manufacturing hubs help safeguard delivery timelines and bolster pricing competitiveness.
For enterprise energy consumers and project developers, the expanded capacity promises greater supply stability for high-spec generation assets essential to critical infrastructure stability. Industrially, the multi-million-dollar commitment demonstrates how ongoing digital transformation and data center expansion continue to catalyze capital investment across capital goods, electrical component manufacturing, and localized power generation infrastructure.
Headquartered in Jaraguá do Sul, Brazil, WEG is a global manufacturer specializing in electric motors, power generation equipment, transformers, and industrial automation solutions. Established in 1961, the company employs over 50,000 workers across manufacturing facilities in 18 countries, generating more than R$ 40.8 billion in net revenue in 2025.
