NETHERLANDS; NORWAY —Yara has officially inaugurated its industrial carbon capture facility at the Sluiskil ammonia and fertilizer plant in the Netherlands, bringing a cross-border carbon capture and storage system into operation. The facility is designed to capture and liquefy up to 800,000 tonnes of CO2 each year from ammonia production, with the captured gas temporarily stored at the site before being transferred for maritime transport.
Northern Lights will transport the liquefied CO2 from Sluiskil to Øygarden in Norway, where it will be held before being injected into an offshore geological storage formation 2,600 meters below the seabed. The project is expected to permanently capture and store approximately 12 million tonnes of CO2 over 15 years, creating an integrated chain covering capture, liquefaction, transport and permanent storage across two countries.
The development is significant for energy-intensive industries because ammonia and fertilizer production generates process emissions that cannot be fully addressed through conventional energy-efficiency measures alone. The Sluiskil system provides a route for reducing emissions while maintaining existing industrial production, and its cross-border structure demonstrates how industrial facilities can connect with dedicated CO2 transport and storage infrastructure located in another country.
The project also has implications for European carbon management infrastructure. Fertilizer and ammonia producers, as well as other hard-to-abate industries such as cement and waste processing, could require similar transport and permanent storage networks as carbon reduction requirements increase. The availability of shared storage capacity in Norway could therefore support companies operating in countries where suitable geological storage is limited.
For Yara, the facility provides a mechanism to reduce the emissions intensity of ammonia and fertilizer production at Sluiskil and support lower-carbon products. The project also connects the company to Northern Lights, a CO2 transport and storage provider operating the Norwegian infrastructure used to receive and permanently store captured emissions.
