Finnish construction group YIT has secured a fixed-price all-in contract worth approximately EUR 30 million from the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency for the modernization and expansion of the Oulu Passenger Rail Yard.

FINLAND Finnish construction firm YIT Corporation has agreed to an all-in, fixed-price contract valued at EUR 30 million with the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency to execute the Oulu Passenger Rail Yard RU2 project in Oulu, Finland. Co-funded by the City of Oulu, the development serves as a major initiative to modernize rail infrastructure in northern Finland. The overall scope encompasses the renovation of existing station platforms, the construction of two new platforms, track modernization, and the installation of two new underpasses alongside the refurbishment of an existing underpass. Additional technical works include track electrification, upgraded lighting systems, outdoor safety installations, maintenance access roads, yard drainage, integrated bicycle storage, and specialized safety systems for a car loading dock.

Scheduled to begin in September 2026 with an estimated completion date by the end of 2029, construction will proceed in three distinct phases to ensure continuous, uninterrupted passenger train operations. The initial phase focuses on eastern track structures, platform sections, and tunnels, followed by the middle platform section, and concluding with city-side infrastructural improvements. The project addresses growing regional passenger volume, substantially improving station accessibility, operational safety, and overall transit capacity. The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency functions as the primary developer overseeing national transport networks, while YIT Corporation is a leading European construction group generating EUR 1.8 billion in turnover in 2025 across seven operating markets.

Upgrading the Oulu Rail Yard is critical for optimizing regional transportation corridors and supporting urban development across the City of Oulu. By increasing capacity and removing structural bottlenecks, the infrastructure development aligns with broader European trends prioritizing sustainable rail transport over carbon-intensive travel modes. Enhancing node accessibility directly supports local economic expansion while integrating modern multi-modal transport features, such as dedicated bicycle facilities and improved pedestrian underpasses.

For YIT Corporation, securing this EUR 30 million contract reinforces its market presence and technical expertise in complex railway engineering environments. The booking, recorded in the third-quarter order book for 2026, directly aligns with YIT's strategic focus on expanding its core traffic infrastructure division. The project demonstrates the stable commercial opportunities emerging from public-private co-financed infrastructure initiatives, highlighting sustained institutional commitment to civil infrastructure and public transit investments.
