Zydus Sunshine Lifesciences has signed an agreement with the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka to set up a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Horana. Backed by a phased investment exceeding USD 20 million, the plant aims to strengthen local medicine supply chain resilience and commence commercial production by 2028.

SRI LANKA —Zydus Sunshine Lifesciences (Pvt) Ltd, a joint venture between Zydus Lifesciences Limited and Sunshine Healthcare, has formalized an agreement with the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka to construct a manufacturing facility within the BOI industrial zone in Horana. The project involves a phased financial commitment exceeding USD 20 million, spanning a four-acre site, with commercial manufacturing operations scheduled to begin in 2028 subject to regulatory clearances and project schedules.

Zydus Lifesciences Limited is a prominent Indian multinational pharmaceutical company headquartered in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, engaged in the discovery, development, manufacturing, and marketing of a broad range of healthcare therapies and medicinal products globally. Sunshine Healthcare is a key healthcare enterprise operating under Sunshine Holdings PLC, a diversified Sri Lankan conglomerate with strong market presence across healthcare, agribusiness, and consumer goods sectors.

This strategic capital expenditure is designed to bolster regional pharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities and secure long-term medicine supply chain resilience within South Asia. By shifting a portion of production closer to regional consumer markets, the facility aims to mitigate external supply vulnerabilities and ensure dependable local availability of essential healthcare therapeutics.

During its initial phase of operations, the facility will concentrate on producing oral solid dosage formulations explicitly tailored to meet domestic healthcare demands within Sri Lanka. This development significantly scales up Zydus Lifesciences' international manufacturing footprint while advancing broader corporate objectives to broaden cross-border access to affordable, high-quality medical treatments.

For enterprise investors and pharmaceutical stakeholders, this cross-border collaboration highlights an emerging regional trend toward localized manufacturing hubs designed to bypass traditional import dependencies. Market participants are expected to monitor regulatory execution timelines and supply chain integration milestones closely as the project progresses toward its targeted 2028 commercial launch.
